Etude Winery
etude An etude in classical music is a way in which a composer sets up a piece in a technical way to allow a musician to work on one special skill. This singular focus and attention to one skill is the exact mindset that Etude has taken with its wine. First of all, Tony Soter who is the founder of Etude lists his occupation as wine grower instead of wine maker, which is incredibly rare within the industry. I believe this focus on the vineyard is truly part of the long term business philosophy of Etude and not simply a talking point. We can also see their focus in their production of a limited number of wines. Largely distributed wines do not exist from Etude, but they are famous for two offerings: their Napa Cabernet Sauvignon and their Carneros Pinot Noir. I believe that focusing efforts from each area on only one varietal helps sustain their long term focus.
Etude has perhaps the most interesting combination of vineyards you’re likely to run across in Northern California. Beginning with their Carneros vineyard which unlike the rest of the American Viticulture Area of Carneros has volcanic soil instead of raised bay bottom surprised abound. They planted all of their estate vineyards in order to maximize quality of fruit, which in many ways means the minimization of quantity. In their estate vineyards you’ll often see areas of flat ground going un-planted while steep cliffs are covered with vines. This is all done to ensure that the fruit being produced is as concentrated and unique as possible. Lastly, this is a family business that takes care of their facilities and vineyard with an eye toward long term sustainability. Tony uses only sustainable farming practices and tries to ensure that his vineyard exists in harmony with the surrounding ecosystem. They allow native plants to exist on the property which is common among other wineries but go at least one step further by making sure that native animal species have the ability to pass through the vineyard unmolested. Lastly they have left all native wetlands on the property while working to restore creeks that once crossed the property.
